The 16th annual edition of Education Week's Quality Counts published in January of this year ranks Florida's school above average with a score of 79.4 (compared to 76.5 for the U.S.) and a rank of 11.
Florida State Department of Education tracks all schools in Florida and its preliminary rankings for 2012 were just released this week. Their website provides a wealth of information about each school and ranks schools according to their grade point score. This year's grade reflect both higher standards and temporary adjustments to ease the transition to Common Core State Standards and Assessments.
Central Florida schools did well. Seminole County schools ranks 5th in the state with all nine high schools earning A's and B's. For high schools, Crooms Academy ranks 37 in the state and highest in Seminole County, and Lake Mary HS ranks 175 and a grade of B.

Early Admissions to Elite Colleges
The number of early admission applicants to colleges and universities continues to rise even though the total number of applicants to college is expected to have peaked. For the elite schools (Ivy League plus other top 10 colleges), the number of early applicants increased by 9%.
U of Chicago continues it's recent fast growth spurt with a 20% increase y-o-y, while some colleges like Dartmouth experienced an unusually large decrease in early applicants.
The percent of applicants admitted early remains much higher than overall admit rates for all institutions. For example, while the overall admit rate for Harvard is expected to remain below 6%, its admit rate for Single Choice Early Action (SCEA) program is more than 3 times higher at 18.8%. This does not mean that it is much easier to get into Harvard or any of the other schools by applying early. It is important to point out that the early pools contain most of the recruited athletes (with very high acceptance rates), legacies (with relatively high acceptances), and URMs (e.g. Questbridge, with higher than average acceptances) which tends to distort the true admit rate for applicants without any hooks. That said, many colleges do look favorably on early applicants who show strong interest and commitment to the school.
The last column calculates the percentage of the freshman class already filled early. Applicants should not be discouraged by the 106% for CalTech and 99% for UofChicago since their yield typically runs near 1/3 and they ultimately admit twice as many during the regular decision cycle.

NACAC Survey Factors Important to College Admissions
The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) annually surveys member colleges and universities to see what admissions factors figure most prominently into admissions decisions. The results from the most recent survey in 2010 for those factors that are considered important (by percentage of Admissions Officers) are shown in the following table.
Although grades and strength of curriculum always come out on top over 17 years of surveying, other variables like class rank and standardized test scores change over time. 17 years ago SAT/ACTs were judged to be an important factor for admissions by 46% of the admissions officers while class rank was consider important by 42%. Over the years standardized tests have increased in importance to near 60% while class rank has fallen to near 22%. Thus despite the highly publicized claims by numerous colleges that they rely less on SAT/ACT, the fact of the matter is that vast differences in high school curriculum (and therefore the lower the reliability of class ranking), forces colleges to continue to rely heavily on standardized tests to put all applicants on the same national scale.
Another much talked about trend - a movement away from AP tests - is not borned out by the NACAC data. AP test scores are judged important by 10% of the admissions officers compared to 5% just 6 years ago.
Another "common wisdom" - the importance of demonstrated interested (visits, emails, etc.) for college admissions - is confirmed by the survey data which shows that this factor has risen in importance from 7 percent in 2004 to 23 percent in 2010 for admissions officers.
Note that every college sets its own priorities within the framework of individual admissions philosophies which you may find in their common data set disclosure. For example, Princeton admissions office considers very important:

Another much talked about trend - a movement away from AP tests - is not borned out by the NACAC data. AP test scores are judged important by 10% of the admissions officers compared to 5% just 6 years ago.
Another "common wisdom" - the importance of demonstrated interested (visits, emails, etc.) for college admissions - is confirmed by the survey data which shows that this factor has risen in importance from 7 percent in 2004 to 23 percent in 2010 for admissions officers.
Note that every college sets its own priorities within the framework of individual admissions philosophies which you may find in their common data set disclosure. For example, Princeton admissions office considers very important:
· Strength of curriculum and grades achieved
· Results from the SAT I or ACT (with writing)
· Results from SAT Subject Tests (any two)
· Class rank
. Recommendation from guidance counselor and two teachers
· Writing as demonstrated in the Essays
Taking the time to understand what a college considers important in the admissions decision will give you a good idea of how your application will be evaluated by that school. Unfortunately it will give you a good estimate of your chances for admissions since they do not disclose the precise weight of each factor they consider important.

Admissions to Elite Colleges Continue to Get Harder
Admissions to elite US colleges continues to get harder each year. The percentage of admissions to one list of top 10 colleges sank below 10% for the first time with the class of 2015. Admissions to the Ivies plus Stanford and MIT dropped to 9.5% from 10.3% last year and 13.3% for the class of 2011 just 4 years ago. This increase in competitiveness is due mostly to a 45% increase in number of applicants from 4 years ago since the number of seats and number of admits in these colleges have increase by about 4%. The total number of college applicants should have topped out last year but the number of applications submitted per student has increased and the number submitted to the top 10 schools has continued to grow, up 9.8% from last year. Part of the increase for the top 10 schools is due to Columbia's acceptance of the common app for the first time this year which saw applications to that school jump nearly 33%. But every one of the top 10 schools saw an increase and this was probably due to the fact that these schools continue to be needs-blind while others have seen a decline in available funds for financial aid.

Ranking NJ High Schools by AP Scores
Measuring and ranking the performance of high schools is almost as controversial and difficult as ranking colleges. One of the most popular ranking is that produced by Newsweek. It is primarily based on the number of AP or IB tests taken versus the total number of students in that school. But this ranking is too simplistic and tend to claim a school is good if it encourages a lot of kids to take AP classes even though they could not learn the material well. A better way to assess how a good a school is would be to measure the percentage of kids scoring at least a 3 or better on the AP exam versus the number of kids who could have taken these classes.
For example, Newsweek finds that the best high school in NJ is McNair Academy where 84% of the students in 11th and 12th grade took AP classes in '09-'10. Newsweek ranked this school #50 in the country in last year's poll (6/13/2010). Unfortunately only 56% of these students scored a 3 or above on the AP test - 44% would have been considered failing to have learned the material well. Most colleges would not have given credit for AP scores of 3 or under. By this measure, Elizabeth High, did even better than McNair Academy with 93% of their students taking AP classes last year. Unfortunately only 25% of their students scored 3 or better on the AP test. Here, the school is clearly misdirecting resources - pushing students to take AP classes when they have not learned the basic material well enough to do well on HSPA or the SAT. If Newsweek's measure becomes more popular it would cause educators who want to do well on the Newsweek survey to misdirect resources from teaching fundamentals to offering AP classes to unprepared students - doing a huge disservice to the students in the process.

The table below ranks NJ high schools by this measure. By this measure McNair Academy falls to #6 and Elizabeth HS falls to #60.
